The anti-aging market is a billion dollar business. But do anti wrinkle creams work? Is it really possible to reverse aging and keep the soft smooth skin of youth?
In many ways, we all have a love-hate relationship with the anti- aging wrinkle cream industry. We regard it with much cynicism and yet we want to believe that there is a magical face cream that really works.
In an effort to separate the truths from the lies, I’ve made some digging to know exactly what independent research says about anti wrinkle creams.
Which Anti Wrinkle Cream Ingredients Really Work?
Every year, anti-aging companies claim they have the special formula that can eliminate wrinkles. And yet the following year, they would claim yet again that they have found ANOTHER ingredient and this time, it REALLY is the ingredient that will clear your wrinkles away.
They seem to find a different ingredient every year that is touted as the holy grail in wrinkle treatments – the magic potion that everyone has been looking for.
Is this just a clever marketing ploy to get us all interested in their new products?
The thing is many of these claims are based on only 1 -2 research with a limited sampling.
And as many research professionals will tell you, that’s not often enough.
But what if I tell you that that there is one ingredient that has been proven in dozens of research studies to be effective in managing and fading lines and wrinkles.
This ingredient is tretinoin or retinoic acid. It’s not the sexiest nor the newest ingredient in the beauty industry but it works.
And isn’t that what you want for an anti-wrinkle cream?
So what is Tretinoin?
Tretinoin is a derivative of Vitamin A and works the skin in two different ways. First, it tightens the surface and secondly, it promotes collagen formation.
One Small Problem
There’s only one problem with this, though. Because tretinoin works so well, it is no longer considered a cosmetic but a drug. And this means one thing. You can’t get it over the counter.
However, if you’re like me, you probably don’t want to have to go to a dermatologist every time you want to see if a product works on your skin. So often than not, a tretinoin-based cream is something we don’t have very easy access to.
There is another Vitamin A derivative, which is not as potent as tretinoin but is also considered effective in smoothing out wrinkles. This is retinol and is the main ingredient in many over the counter creams.
A study by the University Of Michigan Health System showed that after 6 months of continued use of retinal based lotions, wrinkles in elderly patients significantly improved. You can see the before and after photos here.
This only goes to show that retinol, although not as strong as prescription-only tretinoin products is just as promising in the fight against aging.
A Word Of Caution When Using Anti Wrinkle Facial Cream
One of the side effects of tretinoin and retinol cream are peeling, dry skin and burning . This is normal and it is possible that many who try it for the first time will experience these sensations.
Because of this, it is best to start retinol very slowly. Apply it on 2-3 times during the first week and then gradually increase the number of days. If you don’t have sensitive skin, you can try to use it daily but to be on the safe side, make sure you apply it only at night and then use a sunscreen during the day.
Different people will obviously react differently so if you’ve never used it before, I sugges starting slow.
The Truth About Anti Wrinkle Creams
There’s also one thing you need to know about anti-aging wrinkle creams. None has ever been found to be as good as botox (no matter what marketing campaigns say). Also, the effects of a good cream do not last forever. That is, if you stop using them, chances are you’ll get wrinkles back again.
So if you’re really serious about taking care of your skin, you may just have to accept the fact that covering your face and body with wrinkle creams is a daily regimen you have to live with for the rest of your life.Get rid of hyperpigmentation, black spots and lighten skin color!
