What Causes Dark Circles Under Eyes?

There are many reasons why dark circles form around the eye area. This include:

  • hyperpigmentation
  • Allergies
  • Eye swelling
  • lack of sleep
  • stress
  • genes
  • aging
  • shadows formed by loss of facial volume

Always apply sun protection. Your skin will thank you for it.

Hyperpigmentation Causes Dark Circles Under Eyes

Overexposure to the sun causes  hyperpigmentation on the skin. This affects the eye area too.  This is why it’s important to use sun cream to protect the skin from sun damage.

Allergies

I suffer from allergies and regularly get dark circles around my eyes during allergy season. The good thing with this cause of under eye dark circles is that it’s temporary and you can do something about it.

The most practical thing to do is to regularly take your allergy medicine when it starts. For many, this is often enough. But there are others who still get a faint manifestation of the symptoms and this could include the persistent dark circles.

Lack Of Sleep

I  keep saying this a lot. If you want good skin and a healthy body? Get your sleep pattern sorted out. Sleep is very important when it comes to your skin’s health. If you don’t get enough sleep, this will show in your face and often, this usually comes in the form of dark circles, puffy and tired-looking eyes.

Stress

Stress alone doesn’t necessarily lead to dark circles. It’s the things you do when you’re stressed that contribute to dark circles, like not sleeping enough.

Aging

Yes, unfortunately, it is one of those things we all have to deal with. The older you are, the easier and quicker the circles around the eyes form. Your skin no longer produces as much collagen as it used to so it takes longer for your skin to recover from any damage.

Shadows -- they can cause your dark circles too!
Shadows — they can cause your dark circles too!

When you were 17,  you may have spent so many sleepless nights rocking your world away and didn’t see the slightest sign of dark circles. However, now that you’re at the wonderful ripe age of 40, even just one night of booze and sleeping late would immediately show in your face (especially your eyes) the following morning.

Genes

Look at your parents. If they have dark circles around the eyes, it’s very likely that you have/will have them too. This is the most difficult kind of dark circles around the eyes to get rid of and may need the services of a skilled doctor.

Shadows Formed By Loss of Facial Volume

These days, people talk a lot about makeup contouring to play with shadows and give the effect of high cheekbones or a smaller face. Funny enough, this concept nature does very well too but not in the way we want it. When you lose facial volume, this could leave  a “valley” between your face and cheeks, thus giving that shadowy circle around your eyes.
